The UCC Coalition for LGBT Concerns & LGBT Rights

According to their website,  “The United Church of Christ Coalition for LGBT Concerns advocates for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the UCC, and equips UCC congregations to become effective witnesses to Christ’s extravagant welcome.”

The Coalition was founded in 1972, and has helped the UCC reach each of its milestones on the path to acceptance and justice for its LGBT and same-gender-loving (SGL) members. The group has mounted a staggering number of nation-wide campaigns. These would include the decriminalizing same-sex relationships, supporting for marriage equality, and the right of LGBT parents to adopt children.

The UCC boasts more than 1,100 unique congregations that are now “Open and Affirming” which is their catch phrase for the movement within the church to make welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members and visitors.

The UCC Coalition’s list of actions relating to LGBT rights is impressive, with dozens of major issues directly addressed since 1969.

The Coalition claims it is “building a stronger movement for inclusion and justice in the UCC, and beyond,” and that “Our work continues until every congregation in the United Church of Christ can offer a authentic and confident welcome to LGBT seekers and their families.”
