The ACLU has made available a joint publication brought about by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the National Center for Transgender Equality. It is titled, “Protecting the Rights of Transgender Parents and their Children: A Guide for Parents and Lawyers“.
The ACLU webpage states, “All too often parents who have transitioned or come out as transgender after having children have seen their gender transition raised by their ex-spouse or partner as a basis to deny or restrict custody or visitation. Transgender people who formed families after transitioning have faced challenges to their legal status as parents, often based on attacks on the validity of their marriages. This guide provides information to transgender parents and their attorneys to help them protect parent-child relationships and assist them when faced with disputes over child custody issues.”
The guide can be purchased in hardcopy form through the ACLU LGBT & AIDS Project at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling (212) 549-2627. A digital version in PDF format can be download directly from the ACLU page at no cost.

You can download and install a free PDF file reader for Microsoft Windows at http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/ . We recommend this reader over the over-bloated Adobe Acrobat Reader software but either will work.
