Outrageous! Rio School FINES Transgender Student For Wearing Skirt To Class!

17-year-old Maria Muniz, born Mario Muniz, had never felt happy being a biological boy and decided to come out by wearing a skirt to school.

But her difficult decision failed to find support among the faculty of the Pedro II School, in Rio de Janeiro, who imposed a fine for her presentation and ordered her to wear pants in lieu of a skirt to class in future.

A week after Muniz was reprimanded, a group of her Colégio Pedro II classmates decided a protest was in order. Both male and female students would show their feelings regarding the school’s actions by wearing skirts to school on the same day. Many of the participating classmates then posted images on social media sites where sharing quickly skyrocketed.

School officials were forced to backtrack regarding their strict policy when Muniz’ classmates’ actions captured the attention of an international audience.

“I always turned up in trousers but I felt repressed and for me wearing a skirt was about expressing my freedom over who I am inside and not how society sees me,” said the teen. “I am really happy about the way my classmates supported me and I hope it serves as an example to others to feel encouraged to do the right thing. I was always taught at school to accept who you are, I am only trying to live that.”

Following the protest, the Brazilian school’s principal agreed that school officials were now considering relaxing the school policies.

“The sexual orientation is not important for us. All our students are equal. However, the uniform determines male and female clothing, but we will study a new manual of coexistence”, he said.
