Mills College Changes Policy To Allow TG Students To Enroll

Male-to-female transgender students who identify as female can now be considered for enrollment at Mills College, an all-female school in Oakland, California. The change in the school’s policy made the liberal-arts institution the first of the country’s 119 single-sex colleges to possess an official policy of acceptance for transgender applicants.

The new policy, which the trustees’ enrollment committee unanimously approved back in May, went into full effect as students returned to class on August 27th.

Applicants who “are not assigned to the female sex at birth” but identify as female will now be considered for enrollment. Applications who say they “do not fit into the gender binary” will also be allowed to apply if they were identified as female at birth.

For the purpose of clarity, the new policy states that the Oakland college will not consider students who were born genetically female, but have undergone a legal change of gender to male before they apply to the school. However any female student who has legally become male after enrolling may stay and graduate. Also, anyone can apply for the graduate program, which is coed.
